Book Review: Illicit Intent

“Calliope had never had a relationship that lasted longer than a month. It wasn’t a hard and fast rule; it was just that she never seemed to stick around long enough to entertain the notion of permanence. Tox though…”

“Illicit Intent”, by Debbie Baldwin

I’m delighted to join the Blog Tour of “Illicit Intent” by Debbie Baldwin. Many thanks to Jenn of The Book Review Crew, the publishers Gatekeeper Pressand of course the author for organising the tour and gifting me an e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

When underworld courier and gambler Franco Jasic loses a valuable package in a game of Texas hold ‘em, events are put in motion that stretch well beyond Vegas…

Calliope Garland works in New York as an investigative reporter for online news site “The Harlem Sentry”. Working to gather information for a story on a less-than-legitimate financial CEO, Calliope finds herself in possession of more than she bargained for, and is soon being pursued by dangerous forces.
Thrown together (literally!) with Miller “Tox” Buchanan of Bishop Security, Calliope must try to handle the situation she finds herself in, as well as her undeniable attraction to Tox…

From the start of “Illicit Intent”, author Debbie Baldwin plunges the reader into the action and quickly introduces many characters in the midst of various intriguing situations. I’ve not yet read the first book in the Bishop Security series (“False Front”), but book 2 worked well for me as a standalone, with the plot moving along quickly and drawing me in with its many twists and turns.

I’ve don’t think I’ve read a book quite like this before, combining a pacy thriller story line with a strong romance element; and that really made it stand out to me from previous thrillers I’ve read. Calliope and Tox have such great chemistry and I particularly enjoyed Calliope as a character – such a strong female lead!

Readers should be aware that this book contains violence and sexually explicit content, but if you enjoy a fast-paced action thriller with romance thrown in, this is the book for you!

I’m taking part in the blog tour for the next installment in this series in November, and I look forward to sharing my thoughts on book 3, “Buried Beneath” then!
